Hello Kitty Bunny Candy

My favourite Hello Kitty theme from Sanrio is Hello Kitty as a pastel bunny rabbit. I fell in love with this line as soon as I saw it and bought everything I could find with it (mostly letter sets and memos). So, when I came across some candy in the same theme in Japan, I couldn’t help myself…I just had to buy it. I didn’t even care what the candy was – the packaging had me sold. Lol.

Hello Kitty Candy
To be honest, I am not a big fan of most hard candy…give me chocolate any day. But, this one was just too cute to resist. Having said that, I bought this on our first night in Japan and I did not open it until today (about 5 weeks later!). I carried it all over Japan and then home with me.

But, today I thought I would finally open it and see what was inside. This was what I found:

Hello Kitty Candy 2
Even the individual packaging inside is cute! Each packet features a picture of Hello Kitty as a pink, purple or blue bunny rabbit. There are nine designs in total.

Hello Kitty Candy 3
You even get a cute little sticker:

I’m not even sure if I will eat them. I might try one of each flavour and then give the rest away. Perhaps I’ll slip some inside some Christmas presents. What do you think? 🙂

Rilakkuma Lawson Promotion

Convenience stores are everywhere in Japan. When we are in Japan, we often visit them to pick up snacks and drinks. In particular, we tend to visit them last thing at night to pick up something for breakfast the next morning.

One of the most common convenience store chains is called Lawson. We went to Lawson quite a lot when we were in Kyoto as there was one quite close to our hotel. On our first visit, I discovered these cute little San-X Rilakkuma stickers stuck on lots of pastries, sandwiches and desserts.

Rilakkuma Stickers
On further investigation, I found a leaflet explaining the promotion. Of course, I could not actually read it, but it appeared to be a promotion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rilakkuma. Yay! A kawaii promotion! I surmised that if I collected the stickers, when I had enough, I could exchange them for one of the items shown on the leaflet.

Rilakkuma Lawson Promotion
The item I wanted the most was the cute Rilakkuma mug and, of course, it was the one that required the most amount of stickers – 30 in total. Thankfully, my wonderful hubby was very supportive and helped me collect 25 stickers over the 2 1/2 weeks we were in Japan. My friend then kindly gave me five so by our last night in Tokyo, I had enough to get the mug! I was so happy! 🙂

The mug comes in a cute brown box and features Rilakkuma reading a recipe book, Korilakkuma with a deer and Kiiroitori (the yellow chick) eating an apple.

Rilakkuma Mug From Lawson
It is also dated in recognition of Rilakkuma’s anniversary.

Rilakkuma Anniversary Mug
Even the bottom of the mug is cute!

Rilakkuma Anniversary Mug Base
To be honest, I’m not always the biggest Rilakkuma fan. I do like him, but I prefer many of the other San-X characters, like Sentimental Circus. However, for some reason, I really love this mug and I’m very grateful to my hubby and my friend for helping me collect enough stickers to get it.

It does make me wonder what other adorable kawaii promotions we miss out on though! Oh, to live in Japan! On our last day in Tokyo, Lawson seemed to be expanding on their Rilakkuma promotion with more Rilakkuma snacks appearing on the shelves. 7-11 seemed to be wrapping up a Disney promotion too. If you do have a chance to visit Japan, keep your eyes open – you never know what promotions might be around!

Daigoji Temple, Kyoto

Daigoji Temple was the first place we visited on our stay in Kyoto, Japan in 2013. It probably is not the top of the ‘must see’ list for most visitors to the region, but as we had been to Kyoto several times before, we wanted to see some of Kyoto’s lesser known temples. And it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Daigoji is actually quite a large complex located on the side of a mountain a little southeast of Kyoto. It is made up of lower grounds (Shimo-Daigo) and upper grounds (Kami-Daigo). Sadly, we were not able to see it all as we didn’t get there until about 3pm (we had landed in Tokyo at 7am that morning and had spent most of the day on trains to get to Kyoto).

We only saw some of the lower grounds. We would have loved to see the upper grounds but the trail up takes about an hour to walk and we just did not have the time.

*** Warning: There are LOTS of photos in this blog post ***

Getting to Daigoji Temple

Getting to Daigoji Temple is quite easy. First, we took a train from Kyoto Station to Yamashina Station. It took about five minutes. We then walked to the Yamashina Subway Station (it’s right next to the JR station) and took the subway on the Tozai Line to Daigo Station. This train took about ten minutes.

From Daigo Station, you can walk to Daigoji Temple if you wish. It is supposed to take 20-30 minutes. We opted for the bus.

The Daigo Community bus runs from the station to Daigoji Temple and back again. The bus stop is right outside the station so it is easy to find. It costs 200Y for a single trip or 300Y return. They run every 20 minutes, so you never have to wait too long for a bus to arrive.

The biggest problem with taking the bus is knowing where to get off. The easiest thing is to just ask the driver to tell you when you reach your stop. Or you can do what we did – look a bit lost. Lol. Whenever we look lost in Japan, a kind Japanese person always comes to our rescue. That’s exactly what happened on this bus. A lovely lady guessed where we were going and told us where to get off and then the bus driver showed us where the bus stop was for when we wanted to go back to the station.

This is the bus stop outside the temple (for when you want to return):

Daigoji Temple Bus Stop
Arriving At Daigoji

If you are visiting Daigoji, you might like to stop at the store across the road and pick up a drink or some food (especially if you are heading for the upper grounds) before you enter.

Daigoji Temple Convenience Store
To enter the grounds, you first pass through the outer gate.

Daigoji Temple Outer Gate
You will then find yourself following a long straight path up to the next gate and the entrance to the lower grounds. As you walk along this path, you will notice buildings to the left and right of you. To the left is Sanboin Temple, which is famous for its garden and to the right is Reihokan, a museum. Both require separate admission tickets.

Daigoji Temple Sanboin
Sadly, we did not have time to explore either of these areas. Instead, we headed straight for Niomon, the gate to the lower grounds.

Daigoji Temple Niomin Gate
Shimo-Daigo – The Lower Grounds

Just inside the gate is where you purchase your entry tickets. Entrance to the lower grounds is 600Y each. If you have more time, you could also purchase combination tickets (1000Y for the lower grounds and Sanboin or 1500Y for the lower grounds, Sanboin and the Reihokan Museum).

Daigoji Temple Tickets
The walk into the grounds is very peaceful. You will find yourself on a path surrounded by trees. If it’s quiet, it’s a nice place for spotting butterflies.

At the end of the path, you will see a large building. This is Kondo, the central hall of the Daigoji complex. It was originally built in 926, but has burnt down twice. The current version was relocated here in 1599. It has been designated a national treasure of Japan and is home to the main object of worship at Daigoji, an enshrined statue of the healing Buddha.

Daigoji Temple Kondo
Nearby, you will find several other buildings and shrines.

Daigoji Temple Shrine
The one below is dedicated to the local deity, Seiryu Gongen. It was built in 1517. It plays an important role in events surrounding cherry blossom season at Daigoji.

Daigoji Temple Sakura Shrine
What I like about Daigoji Temple, and, in fact, about most temples in Japan, is that they are still in use. There are still people honouring the traditions and culture of these wonderful places and allowing travellers like us to come and experience them for ourselves.

Daigoji Temple Monk
Perhaps the most important structure you will find at Daigoji is Goju-no-to, a five-storey pagoda. It was built in 951 and is the oldest wooden structure in Kyoto. Like the Kondo, it has been designated a national treasure of Japan.

Daigoji Temple Pagoda
While we enjoyed looking around all of these cultural assets, what we really came to see was the Bentendo Hall and Daigoji’s most scenic spot. You find it by walking up the hill to the top of the lower grounds.

Daigoji Temple Bentendo Pond
I could have sat looking at this scene for hours. It was just so peaceful and quiet. I think the turtles agreed with me.

Daigoji Temple Turtles
The Bentendo Hall is the small structure overlooking the pond. It is dedicated to the goddess of knowledge and liberal arts (like music).

Daigoji Temple Bentendo
You can walk right up to the Bentendo Hall by crossing the bridge.

Daigoji Temple Bentendo Bridge
The whole area is just beautiful. Even around the back of the Bentendo area you will find another pond amongst the greenery and a small waterfall. Being late in the day, there were also very few people around so we were able to really relax and take it all in. Sadly, we couldn’t stay as long as we would have liked as it was getting late in the day and it wasn’t long until closing time.

Our visit to Daigoji was a wonderful way to begin our stay in Japan. Perhaps one day we will return and make the climb to the upper grounds.

Sanrio Character Ranking Promotion

The Sanrio Character Ranking promotion began in September while we were in Japan. Sanrio released 20 new sets of characters and asked consumers to vote on their favourites. These characters were released on sticker sheets and plastic folders and were available in most Sanrio stores. I guess when the voting is finished they will announce the most popular characters and release more goods featuring them.

*** Please note: This will be a picture intensive blog post ***

I like most of the new characters, although I don’t think they really look like Sanrio characters. They look more like characters San-X would release. What do you think?

Sanrio Character Promotion Stickers
I purchased 14 of the 20 sheets of stickers available. The others were just a little bit too odd for me. I probably should have bought them anyway. Lol.

Most of the characters seem to a cross between an animal and some kind of food. The first set of new Sanrio characters seem to a cross between kawaii alpacas and hot dogs and other carnival food. Personally, I like the ice-creams. 🙂

Sanrio Character Stickers - Alpacas
The second set of characters is a cross between giraffes (and other animals) and mushrooms. It’s an unusual combination, but Sanrio seems to have pulled it off quite well. I think they are called Enokida Kirin. Actually, this is one of my favourite sheets of stickers from this collection, but I’ve always had a soft spot for cute giraffes.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Giraffes
The third collection focuses on panda onigiri (rice balls). Also featured are bunny rabbits, bears, chicks and the cutest little frankfurt character.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Panda Onigiri
The next collection is another food-related character. I’m not sure what it’s called, but I thought this one was particularly cute. I kind of wish they were smiling though…they all look so sad. 🙁

Sanrio Character Stickers - Dango
I think this next character is an orange racoon. Its tail is a bit odd, but I think it’s a cute character. I like the fruit and vegetables with smiley faces.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Racoon
I love this next character. It’s a bit strange, but for some reason, I just love it. It’s an egg yolk. I particularly like the one using the egg shell as a lounge chair. It just amuses me. 🙂

Sanrio Character Stickers - Egg Yolk
These Sanrio characters are another set of onigiri kawaii characters. Again, it’s not the sort of character I would expect to see from Sanrio, but it is very cute, especially the little one in glasses.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Onigiri
Panda bread also features amongst this new collection from Sanrio. It seems to be going through a whole range of emotions. I never knew anger could be so cute! I also like the toasted one with butter on its head.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Panda Bread
I can’t quite figure out what this next character is. It’s cute and pink and it obviously some kind of food, but I have no idea what. Do you have any ideas?

Sanrio Character Stickers - Pink
Kawaii cats are always high on my list of favourites, so I particularly like this sheet of Sanrio character stickers. It features the cutest little yellow cat. I think it’s called Nyan Neya. I really hope this one gets lots of votes. I’d love to see more products featuring this cat, especially more stickers and perhaps a letter set.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Cat
Mt Fuji has always been an important icon in Japan. It has also been featured amongst Sanrio’s new characters, albeit as a pudding with a chicken face. I particularly like these stickers too. They make a cute addition to my Sanrio stickers collection but also an unusual souvenir from Japan.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Mt Fuji
The next characters are a set of egg shell bears. Another unlikely but cute combination.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Egg Bears
This sheet of Sanrio stickers is particularly Japanese. The characters are supposed to be samurai onigiri. You’re unlikely to see cuter samurais than these.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Samurai
And finally, we come to my absolute favourite from the new collection of Sanrio characters – the mushroom forest characters. These are just soooooo cute! I really hope they release more with these characters. I’d probably buy it all. Lol.

Sanrio Character Stickers - Mushroom Forest
I liked these characters so much, I even bought the matching plastic folder.

Sanrio Character Folder - Mushroom Forest
Now you have seen everything I purchased from this new collection of characters from Sanrio. Other characters included a very strange looking geisha, meat heads and more. You can see them all at http://sanriocharacterranking.com/

Which new Sanrio character is your favourite?

Kyoto Lunch

Lunch in Kyoto was our first priority when we arrived in Japan. We reached Kyoto at about 1pm, after having landed in Tokyo that morning at 7am. It was too early to check in to our hotel, so we dropped off our suitcases and headed out in search of food.

We headed towards Yodobashi Camera and found Delifrance just outside. It was perfect.

Delifrance Kyoto
Delifrance in Kyoto was a bit different to the Delifrance outlets here in Sydney. It was a cross between a self-serve bakery, sandwich bar and coffee bar. We ordered a roll each, a pastry to share and an icy cold peach soda (it was so good on such a hot day!).

Lunch In Kyoto
The rolls contained egg, prawns, salad and an unusual sauce. I don’t know what was in the sauce, but it does seem to be used a lot in Japan.

Lunch In Kyoto - Prawn Roll
I have to admit, when we purchased the pastry, I had no idea what was inside. I just liked the cute heart shape. It turned out to be apple and quite good.

Lunch In Kyoto - Heart Pastry
It was a nice start to our stay in Kyoto. It gave us the opportunity to relax and recover from our long journey from Sydney and work out what to do with the rest of our afternoon. We were pretty tired, but we decided to head to Daigoji Temple after our lunch in Kyoto…but I will save that for another blog post.

Disney Letter Sets

Disney letter sets are another thing I hunt for when in Japan. They aren’t always easy to find, but they are so cute that they are worth the time it takes to find them. On our most recent trip, I found twelve Disney letter sets and two Disney mini letter sets. Actually, I found more than that, but that was all that I could fit in my suitcase. 🙂

My favourite find was the Romantic Minnie and Daisy collection by Sun-Star. I had seen these online before we left and I was hoping to find them in Japan. I was very excited when I walked into a store in Osaka and saw them sitting there. Of course, they went straight into my shopping basket.

Romantic Minnie & Daisy Letter Sets
Aren’t they sweet? I love the soft colours. The large sets come with 30 sheets (3 designs, 10 of each) and 20 envelopes (4 designs, 5 of each). The mini sets come with 16 sheets (2 designs, 8 of each) and 8 envelopes (2 designs, 4 of each). It’s a shame there weren’t co-ordinating stickers. I did see co-ordinating memo pads though.

Another Disney collection I was looking for was the Mickey and Minnie sweets collection by Kamio. Again, I had seen them online and was hoping to pick them up in Japan. Thankfully, they were very easy to find.

Mickey & Minnie Sweets Letter Sets
The Mickey Mouse set follows a candy and chocolate theme while the Minnie Mouse set features a donuts and cookies theme. Both are super cute! I love the way Kamio stylises characters like Mickey Mouse to look like a sketch. It just seems to add to their cuteness. Both sets come with 32 sheets (4 designs, 8 of each) and 16 envelopes (4 designs, 4 of each).

I also found a new style of Disney characters by Kamio. They appear to resemble the Disney Cuties a little. The style seems to be called Drop Kitsch and the artwork is done by Seri Norica, the illustrator of Astro Baby.

Mickey & Friends Disney Letter Set
This Disney letter set features Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Chip and Dale. I particularly like smiling Donald and Daisy. It comes with 32 sheets (4 designs, 8 of each) and 16 envelopes (4 designs, 4 of each).

Another one of my surprise finds was this sweet Bambi letter set:

Bambi Disney Letter Set
It wasn’t the same value for money as the other sets but I thought it was sweet. The price was the same as the other sets, but it only came with 20 sheets (2 designs, 10 of each) and 10 envelopes (1 design). It was part of a collection of stationery by Sun-Star. There were other characters available in the collection, including Alice In Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh, as well as other stationery items, like notebooks.

Because of the lower value (and my rapidly filling up suitcase), I chose to just purchase the Bambi letter set. I’ve always been a big fan of Bambi, especially Thumper, and I really like the colours on this set.

I also found some single design Disney letter sets by Sun-Star. Each set comes with 8 sheets and 4 matching envelopes.

Disney Letter Sets
Sun-star has released a lot of these Disney letter sets and they don’t seem to retire them. Many of the sets I saw on this trip were the same as those that I saw in 2012…and even then, many of them were old designs. I did manage to find some new ones for my collection though. I particularly like the Mickey ears fruit design. I don’t know why…I just do. 🙂

I’ve saved my luckiest find until last – my Choco To Happiness Mickey & Minnie letter set:

Disney Store Mickey Letter Set
This set was released by the Disney Store Japan many years ago and it was a complete surprise that I found it. We were visiting a collectible toys store (a non-kawaii, non-cute store) and it was just sitting there…and it was priced below retail. So, of course, I snapped it up.

It follows a Valentines theme, so I am guessing it was released around Valentines Day one year. It comes with 16 sheets (single design), 8 envelopes (4 designs, 2 of each), 8 memo sheets and a sheet of stickers. It also comes in a cute little box, although that did get a little squashed in my suitcase.

I love them all, but I think the romantic collection will remain my favourite. What do you think?

The Narita Express Train

Your first experience when you arrive in Tokyo is likely to be a ride on the Narita Express train from Tokyo Airport. The Narita Express (also known as the NE’X) is a fast train that takes you straight from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station and if you wish, on to Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro or Yokohama.

We love the Narita Express. It’s very easy to find – you just have to take the escalator downstairs at the airport and you are there. It’s also very quick, taking just under an hour to reach Tokyo Station. On our first few trips to Japan, we tried using shuttle buses direct to our hotel, but found them to be slow (they have to sit through Tokyo traffic) and unreliable (one dropped us two blocks from our hotel). So now, we use the NE’X every time.

The Narita Express train carriages are very comfortable. They really have thought of everything that the traveller needs. At the end of each car is plenty of space for your luggage. There’s even a safety bar so your luggage doesn’t move around too much while the train is in motion.

The seats are also very comfortable. They have high headrests and can be reclined. You even get a seat pocket on the back of the chair in front of you, a drinks holder and a foldaway table.

Narita Express Train
In case you are hungry or thirsty, an attendant comes through the train during your journey with a refreshment trolley. There are menus and price lists in both Japanese and English on a card in your seat pocket so you can choose what you would like to order. You can even purchase a Narita Express train souvenir if you like.

Narita Express Menu
Or you can do what we did on our last trip and pick up a drink from a vending machine on the platform before you board. This time, we choose a kiwi fruit flavoured soft drink. It was good, although it would have been better without the fizz.

Kiwi Fruit Drink Aboard The Narita Express
You don’t have to worry about missing your stop when travelling on this train either. It makes very few stops and there will be an announcement, in English, a few minutes before each stop to give you plenty of time to get your things together and prepare for disembarking the train.

There are also several displays throughout the carriage to show you where you are and what the next stop is so you don’t have to stress.

Narita Express Display
Narita Express Display 2
My favourite thing about the journey on the Narita Express is the scenery. It gives you a great first glimpse of every day life in Japan. You start in a fairly rural area with lots of fields and farmers and gradually make your way towards city life.

Rural Japan From The Narita Express
As you approach the city, you start to see more and more high-rise buildings, power lines, cars and tight living spaces – everything you associate with a big city like Tokyo.

City Life From The Narita Express
If you’re sitting on the right side of the train, you will even catch a glimpse of the new Tokyo Sky Tree as you get closer to Tokyo Station.

Tokyo Sky Tree From The Narita Express
The Narita Express is a relaxing, stress-free way to reach Tokyo from Narita Airport (Terminal 1 or Terminal 2). If you are not a Japanese resident, it is also a great deal. If you are travelling on a Japan Rail Pass, your Narita Express ticket is included so there is no extra cost to you. You can get your ticket at the same place and at the same time that you pick up your rail pass.

A return ticket from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station generally costs 5,880Y (as of October, 2013). However, if you are not a resident of Japan, you can purchase the Narita-Express Suica Card package. We did this on our trip to Japan in 2012 (in 2013, we were travelling on a rail pass). It only costs 5,500Y and includes a Suica card (valued at 500Y) with 1,500Y worth of credit.

Suica cards a brilliant! They are essentially pre-paid cards. You add credit to them and then you can use them to pay for your tickets on all JR trains and subways around Tokyo. Even some stores and vending machines will accept them. They save a lot of time. Instead of having to work out the fare and then purchase a train ticket every time you want to go somewhere, you simply swipe your Suica card at the ticket gates at the station and the correct fare will be automatically deducted from your card. You can see how much credit you have left every time you use them so you will always know when you need to top them up (this can be done at any station too).

They also last for ten years, so if you return to Japan, you can use them again. We found this particularly useful on our last trip. We didn’t need to purchase our Narita Express tickets as we were travelling on a rail pass so we brought our Suica cards from our previous trip and gave them quite a work out around Tokyo.

I hope I have given you a bit of an insight into catching the Narita Express train from Tokyo Airport. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and I will do my best to answer them.

Q-Lia Boxed Memos And Sticker Flakes

I am still unpacking from our trip (I know, I’m slow!) so today I thought I would share another of my cute kawaii finds with you. This time, they are sets of little boxes that were released by popular kawaii brand, Q-lia:

Q-lia Sticker & Memo Boxes
Each set comes with three adorable little boxes. The top box contains scented beads (is that what they are called?), the middle box contains kawaii stickers flakes and the bottom box contains a mini memo pad.

The first set follows a fruit theme and has a very strong orange citrus smell.

Q-lia Fruit Sticker & Memo Boxes
The second set features some adorable penguins. This is probably my favourite set. I love the little memo and the sticker flakes are so cute. I’m not sure what the scent is supposed to be, but it smells kind of like bubble gum.

Q-lia Penguins Sticker & Memo Boxes
The third set features some cute little dogs with floppy ears and smells like strawberries.

Q-lia Dogs Sticker & Memo Boxes
Each set was 262Y each. I’m not sure if it’s good value for money (especially since I don’t know what I will do with all the scented beads) but that’s okay. They are just too cute and I think the sticker flakes will make a nice addition to my collection. It’s a shame there are only two designs in each set though.
